When other treatments are ineffective or not possible, or when the bladder will not empty properly, Interstim can be an excellent treatment option. It is indicated for treatment of overactive bladder, urge incontinence, urinary retention, and fecal incontinence. A small nerve stimulator is inserted through openings in the sacrum (tailbone) to rest on the nerve in the pelvis. The stimulation then redirects the nerve impulses to help the bladder and bowel function properly. The implanted battery is similar to a pacemaker and is hidden under a fat pad on the buttocks. A test procedure is done before the final implant in order to determine the response to treatment.
